SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN

WITH EARTH DAY AROUND THE CORNER, WE’RE THINKING ABOUT THE WORLD WE’LL LEAVE BEHIND FOR OUR KIDS. TAKING STEPS TOWARD TRUE SUSTAINABILITY IS ESSENTIAL TO PRESERVE OUR PLANET FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. SPEAKING OF SUSTAINABILITY…

Did you know that using vintage and antique pieces in your space is one of the most sustainable things you can do?

There is a place for modern pieces, but vintage boasts a bit of patina and soul and a vibrant history. If you think about it, you invoke a new chapter by repurposing something that has lived many past lives.

Did you know that using vintage and antique pieces in your space is one of the most sustainable things you can do?

There is a place for modern pieces, but vintage boasts a bit of patina and soul and a vibrant history. If you think about it, you invoke a new chapter by repurposing something that has lived many past lives.

In addition, we love incorporating familial antiques into the design equation when curating someone’s space. We enjoy taking the time to furnish spaces with more personal pieces. We also collaborate with a fabulous carpenter who specializes in antique restoration and many other trades and has infinite knowledge about the perfect details of a vintage piece.

Antique and vintage pieces get our stamp of approval whenever we can integrate them into a design or project.

Another facet to consider when buying new is quality.

Often, you get fast furniture that, if damaged, could leave you with a lot of waste. These pieces never stand the test of time and quickly need to be replaced with something new (costing more $$) and sent to the rubbish.
We love placing antique or vintage pieces with bespoke, well-made upholstery that can be reupholstered when the fabric gets tired, and all can be passed down for generations to come!

USING SAFE MATERIALS FOR OUR CLIENTS

Many of our clients are understandably concerned about the air they breathe and the materials they touch. Harsh chemicals and unsafe substances have seeped into every pore of our world. For example, fast furniture emits off-gasses once you unwrap/unbox it.

So, we take that into account, especially when designing a child’s room or nursery. We don’t want our clients to breathe harmful gasses and chemicals into their lungs. That’s why we shy away from man-made materials and opt for something natural like a wool rug, which is sustainable and easily cleanable.

Additionally, we consider sustainability when selecting vendors. Do they implement sustainable practices? This is crucial for us.

A PROJECT WITH THE MOST SUSTAINABLE FEATURES

We are proud to share that our Mill Valley project boasts the most sustainable features. For example, we reused a striped gold and burnt red mirror in their dining room by offsetting the surrounding pieces with natural materials and beautiful surfaces. We made a custom games table (this family loves to entertain family & friends) that will last many years to come, becoming their own heirloom pieces. In addition, we redesigned their kitchen, incorporating sustainable materials and repurposing existing surrounding cabinets. This cozy house is nestled among the Redwoods, so an inherently environmental element exists.

As a business, we will continue to do our part in utilizing sustainable design practices to protect our Earth.
